Testing NFSv4 over the WAN: Emulate the WAN with NetEm

Description

This document (.pdf) explains how we have been able to put NetEm at work in our NFSv4 testing environment.

{NetEm is a tool (derived from NIST-Net) aimed to emulate a network with several tunable parameters (delay, packet loss, packet reordering, packet duplication, ...).}

Our conclusion is that this tool is easy to put at work with fresh kernels already patched with NFSv4 from CITI and that it provides useful features for testing NFSv4 over (an emulated) WAN.

NetEm requires you to add one computer (plus 2 network boards) in your testing environment and to define route tables. Quite easy: the document explains everything for people with only basic skills in networking (if not, please let me know).
